I installed a house for the octopus!
Good evening, everyone! Mei here ('◇')ゞ I recently participated in the "Octopus Pot Project", which has been held in Koganezaki in recent years!
You can bring your own octopus pot, or if you can't find a good one, you can use one of the several provided at Koganezaki^^ The names written on them tend to fade, so if you scratch the surface a bit and then write on it, it's less likely to disappear.
Once everyone is ready, it's time to head to the sea!
I took a video of the installation, so these are screenshots, but we attach a string like this and tie it to the rope in the octopus pot area. Sometimes, local updates are posted. Of course! Once you've installed it, you have to dive again to check on your octopus pot!
The water temperature in the sea was 17-18 degrees Celsius, and the visibility was 8-10 meters, so the spring murkiness had cleared up a bit, which was nice! The marine life showed signs of spring, with a huge number of young skeleton shrimp! They look like moving fuzz to the naked eye, but they're amazing when viewed through a camera! lol
There were pairs of pipehorses along the rope.
Although not as numerous as the skeleton shrimp, there were broad-clawed porcelain crabs everywhere! From larger ones about 5 cm long to tiny ones that made me wonder if they were even 1 cm! There were so many of them! And they came in various colors, so you could find your favorite ♪
And then I encountered a cuttlefish in the sandy area! I couldn't identify the species... ( ;∀;)
It was incredibly cute, and its shell was translucent! And, well, it's a squid, after all.
The momentary change in body color was amazing! A guest who was looking at someone else thought the squid had disappeared and we were filming something different, lol. Just when I thought its color had changed, it snuggled up to a shell... incredibly cute!! ♡ After it landed on the sandy bottom, it also made a super cute movement as if walking with its arms.
There were a large number of small fish around a weak, dying jellyfish. I thought there were several species, but they moved so fast that they didn't show up in the photos at all, lol.
Oh! I finally saw a flamboyant cuttlefish! 😢 But it swam a lot (and the location was far), and when we reached the area, there was a bit of a current, and we couldn't find it at all in the spot I heard about (I thought I was in the wrong area, but I was right, so why wasn't it there??). It was getting late, so I gave up and found it on the way back! I'm glad I saw it, but the return trip was tough because we were swimming against the current... sorry!
I also scouted the octopus pots set up by other divers. This time, I only saw two occupied, and one of them had perfect security. The entrance was heavily guarded with a large amount of shells. The pot itself was quite buried, and it was almost invisible because it was covered in sand due to the water's movement (I exhaled sand and then covered it again). I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to the pots we all set up!
On the way back, we stopped at a recently built tsunami evacuation tower + commercial facility in Toi. The restaurant's last order was at 14:30, and the cafe was almost sold out by 15:00, so there was no food, but they had ice cream, pudding, coffee, etc., and the view from above was beautiful, so please let me know if you'd like to request a visit. It's scary to think about how far a tsunami could reach, but knowing where these facilities are and what kind of facilities they are will allow you to act quickly in an emergency, so please visit at least once. (We went up by elevator + stairs, but came down by stairs lol💦) The Koganezaki Octopus Pot Project runs until May 10th, but a tour is scheduled for Friday, May 8th! If you're interested, please contact us! See you next time!
You're sure to be moved and healed by the crystal-clear waters, comparable to resort seas!
